Careers and Graduate School

One of the most important preparations for success after college actually happens while you’re still in college. The right internship can pave the way to graduate school as well as to a career.

Luckily, you won’t be on your own when it’s time to look for an internship. The UMW Office of Career Services will help you every the step of the way.

Strategically located between Washington, D.C., and Richmond, the capital of Virginia, UMW is well-positioned to place students in agency and government internships. But the University’s reputation–and its ability to find top opportunities for students–reaches much further than those two cities. UMW students have gained invaluable real-world experience through internships in science-related industries, business, education, law, health care, the media, and high-tech fields, as well. The list below gives a few examples of the prime placements UMW students have landed in recent years.

UMW graduates are very successful in gaining admission to the country’s top graduate programs. The University has experienced faculty advisors who help students prepare to apply to medical and dental school. UMW also offers support for pre-veterinary and pre-law students. Our students have been accepted into law, medical, veterinary, and dental schools and graduate programs including history, economics, creative writing, chemistry, and ecosystem science at

Because Mary Washington professors know their students, they can write personal recommendation letters that carry a lot of weight.
