Let me know if you need anything :)
Amanda Hart
03:56:37 PM
I can hear and see you!
Hi glenna stephani and marine.
Glynnis Farleigh
03:57:11 PM
Hi!
It broke and you see things coming up in the chat.
OK, I just wanted to make sure because the last one that I did, um, there was some sort of glitch and nothing came up until we closed the session and I felt really bad because there were a bunch of people asking questions that weren't coming up. So I just wanted to make sure that the messages that were coming up you could see.
OK yes and so with the participants should they only ask questions in the chat.
They they they only have that ability, they don't have the ability to use the microphone are video. So yeah, anything that they post and I will try and keep a running list just in case. You know, sometimes they come in really quickly and it's hard to catch all of them, so I'll try and keep a running list for you.
Stephanie Rizzo
03:59:36 PM
Hi! I got in but can't hear anyone
Glynnis Farleigh
03:59:37 PM
Stephanie says that she is able to see the chat function but is not able to use it; seems to be a computer loading issue.
Glynnis Farleigh
03:59:41 PM
Nvm!
A perfect and I do have the questions that were sent ahead of time.
OK let's see Stephanie says she cannot hear.
Stephanie Rizzo
03:59:50 PM
Thanks so much Glynnis!
And then it says never mind.
Can you hear now Stephanie?
Glynnis Farleigh
04:00:16 PM
Dr. Brecht, are you supposed to be able to hear us, or only if we are broadcasting video?

Stephanie Rizzo
04:03:34 PM
Hi Dr. Brecht, I can't hear anything from my end
What I want to start out with is just introductions and so first to introduce myself I'm doctor April brecht and I'm the director of advising for the College of education and then I will have 3 cioe ambassadors on this call with me to some of them are going to speak an answer questions at the end so if each one of them can press the broadcast?
Video and introduce themselves if we can start with Glennis.
Uh, can you guys hear me?
Gabriella C.
04:04:03 PM
Yes
April Brecht
04:04:03 PM
yes
Francesca H.
04:04:04 PM
yes maam
Uhm, I have no idea if this is working OK. Hi yeah so I'm Glennis uhm, I am a history major. I'm a senior. I'm actually going to be graduating in May an then I was one of the last groups to actually be in the 5th year section, which we don't exactly have anymore. But I've been an ambassador for about over a year now and yeah, nice to see you guys here I guess.
OK, sorry that took a second and then if Stephanie and marine each can take turns broadcasting and introducing.
Hi everyone, my name is marine an I am a junior at the University I'm majoring in French and minoring in Spanish with the pre K through 12 program. I've also been an ambassador for about a year now and I'm involved in couple things around campus like our service fraternity as well as our Honor Society for the College of Education. And yeah.
But but will go ahead and get started. So as we move through this presentation, if you all have questions, you can put them in the chat box. I will try to address them as we go, but if I don't get to it, we definitely will get to questions at the end as well as some of you sent in questions ahead of time which I have seen. Those questions and a lot of those questions will be answered through this presentation, so we'll go ahead and get started.
James C.
04:06:40 PM
April — can’t hear/see u now
So first is just talking about the college as a whole so you and WS College of education really wants to develop future teachers who can go in and make an impact in the classroom and so giving you the skills and the knowledge that you need to go in and to develop your practices so you're going to have a lot of practicum experience an internship as we go through all discuss that a little bit further.
Stephanie Rizzo
04:07:01 PM
I'm sorry I'm here too but I can't hear anything!
But we do have a history of educating future teachers. We started out as a normal school, so that is something we have been doing since we opened our doors.
Glynnis Farleigh
04:07:08 PM
If anyone is having trouble hearing, you can click "CC" at the top. It will give you some of a transcript in the chat box.
James C.
04:07:37 PM
Thank you, Glynnis
So we you probably heard a lot about the change in programs and so with the change in programs and I know that was a lot of the questions that were asked ahead of time we currently as of this spring we just admitted our last semester our last class into what was called the 5 year program and that was a 4 year degree plus a one year accelerated Masters.
But with that the accelerated Masters was required for licensure so beginning this fall are programs have all switched to an undergraduate initial license your program and the initial licensure program provides everything that you need to become a licensed teacher within a 4 year time frame and so within each of these I will go from there.
Sorry somethings going on so with the BS in education are elementary education program will be a bachelors of science in education this is the only program that is switching to a major and so you would come into the University Ann when you would select your major you would select elementary education.
This is for grades pre K through 6 I do know that someone in the questions had asked about early childhood and we do not actually have the early childhood program this is the earliest we have which is the elementary pre K through 6 and that is true for our special education program as well.
All right Amanda the slides have.
Amanda Hart
04:09:33 PM
Is control slides green at the top?
Francesca H.
04:09:34 PM
In order to receive your Master's Degree, would a student have to add an additional two years after the four years?
OK I'm going to continue talking uhm I am not sure the the slide presentation has.
Mary M.
04:09:39 PM
Can you major in special ed or do you have to major in something else?
Amanda Hart
04:09:59 PM
I can control them on my end. Let me know when to switch
So the next would be secondary education secondary education is teaching grades 6 through 12 and so that includes both middle and secondary there is a list of programs that you can choose from so if you're interested in computer science English one of the Sciences so biology chemistry earth science physics we also have.
Stephanie Rizzo
04:10:33 PM
I can hear now!
English history or social studies um and mathematics so you can choose one of those programs if you're interested in teaching math or are sorry teaching middle or secondary high school and you can choose to major in one of those particular subject areas and so you would select that as your major and then you would complete the education requirements.
Glynnis Farleigh
04:10:54 PM
Mary, for Special Education, you do not major in SPED. You choose a subject area. Just like secondary education, the SPED requirements will be completed in addition to your major.
On Top of the major requirements but you would still have all the requirements at the end of the 4 years for your degree as well as your teaching license.
Mary M.
04:11:20 PM
Thank you!
And so the next slide is the pre K through 12 program the pre K through 12 program is if you are interested in foreign languages music whether that be instrumental or vocal theater arts or visual arts so if you are interested in one of those particular subjects you would choose a major within that area and then you would as with secondary you would complete the education requirements on Top of the major.
So once again you would finish your undergraduate degree with your major in that particular field as well as your licensure requirements.
And since I cannot pull up or I could not see the slides I apologize I am going to pull up so I can stay on track I do apologize OK so the next slide is special education and so with the special education that is to provide licensure for K through 12 and our special education is for the general curriculum and what that means is that you would be certified to work with students.
Who have mild disabilities whether that be learning disabilities whether it be autism and variety of cognitive there is an endorsement which is called adapted which is for working with students who have more severe disabilities that is not included within this program we do have a post Baccalaureate program for special education adapted but within our undergraduate programs we only have the general curriculum?
So with the special education program students will select a major of their choice it could be any of the majors offered it could be one of the major subject areas so if you have a passion for math or English or science and you'd like to do that we do have a lot of students who select either psychology or sociology but yet not required those are just some of our more popular majors with special education.
Elizabeth G.
04:13:34 PM
I would like to get a masters in education. How does that work now?
Francesca H.
04:13:40 PM
In order to receive your Master's Degree, would a student have to add an additional two years after the four years?
One of the big differences with the new undergraduate program is that students can actually choose the elementary education major and then add on the special education so within the undergraduate program you can complete a major in elementary education as well as the special education licensure requirements.
So we're getting some questions about the Masters and so I will go ahead just since that is a big question for a lot of people I'll stop here and answer that question so with the program switching to an undergraduate that means that like I said all the licensure requirements can be fulfilled within the undergraduate degree starting this fall are faculty are beginning to work.
On an accelerated Masters program so this is going to be a newly developed Masters program for individuals who complete the new undergraduate program we realize the accelerated Masters program is popular and students do like that idea so we are going to develop one but it is going to look very different than what we currently have.
And the reason is is because the current Masters the one year Masters has the remaining requirements for licensure for instance one of the main things that students complete during that fifth year is there internship which is a requirement for licensure and so being that students will already have their licensure requirements completed we are going to be looking at what are some of like.
Add on endorsements that could be offered for instance if a student does complete the undergraduate program in elementary education but wants to add on a specialty of working with English English language learners or has an interest in literacy those types of programs then would be what we're looking at for the accelerated Masters it is early in development stages so it would be.
Francesca H.
04:16:07 PM
Thank you for answering my question!
Potentially starting in 2 years as we would have our first group and that would be a transfer group completing the new undergraduate program so yes there is the potential for the accelerated Masters we are working on it and we hope to have that up in 2 years so for your group you would have that option so hopefully that answers the questions about the Masters it is not required.
Um and so that's a big difference is it doesn't have any of the licensure requirements in it so it will not be required for you to get your teaching license to complete the.
Masters degree so hopefully that answers.
So moving on to the next slide.
So the next slide just talks a little bit about the new structure of the program and the new structure is what we call phases or cohort and so students are going to move through in more of a cohort format which is not true for the current program and so with elementary and special education students will start those programs this second semester of the first year so if you're starting with us this fall in the spring.
You would start taking education courses and I'll get a little bit more into that in just a second but you would then move through that program and you would be taking the same courses as other students who entered the program the same semester same is true for the secondary NP 12 programs but that will start the first semester of your second year.
So once again I'll show that in just a minute.
There will be extensive practicum experience practicums involve smaller periods of time within a classroom setting usually there are 20 hours we also are going to have labs which is similar to practicum except for it's going to be a designated class just for practical so some classes will have a practicum attached to it others it will be just a one credit.
Lab that involves practicum experience we do have a placement.
Urinator who makes the placements for you those placements are made within our surrounding community so most of those placements are made within Fredericks burg Prince William King George Stafford and spotsylvania.
So with the placements one of the questions that we sometimes get is transportation and transportation is not required it may make things a little bit easier.
But if you do not have transportation available you will be placed in a school in which other students are placed so we can look at sharing rides or it could be a placement within a local school so somewhere in Fredericks burg city in which you may have the opportunity to walk for instance if you're doing secondary there is a high school right behind the University so we try to make the best placement.
Based on your needs but you will have a variety of experiences so if you are doing elementary you may have a placement in a kindergarten as well as a placement in fifth grade or if you're doing secondary you may have placement in middle school as well as high school so we want to make sure that when you finish the program you have a variety of experiences and you can kind of pull from those experiences.
As you start to develop your practices.
So I am going to let miss Glennis talk about the next slide.
Susannah M.
04:20:03 PM
sorry- i logged on late idk if this has already been answered...
OK Hello again, um so these slides cover our student organizations capital to p or Katie P and the student Education Association sea so they're both student run except they differ a little bit in the sense that sea any member of the College of Education is as of recently now considered automatically a member of sea and that applies to freshman through graduate students and there's no cost to be apart of it, whereas Katie P is an Honor Society for upperclassmen so juniors and seniors.
In their membership dues in a point system, and you can accrue points by a variety of activities like volunteering or education related things. So in my case, student ambassador accounts for those points, but there's a huge variety of activities an the great thing about both of these organizations is that they're able to bring a number of different symposiums and discussion forums and sort of supplementary activities to education students. So not only are both of them a great way for you to be able to meet other education students and converse with them in a more casual manner, or.
Faculty in the College of education, but they provide a lot of great.
Kind of professional development and give you really good connections to the community, so I highly recommend joining either with them when you get the chance.
So if you look at the next slide the next slide talks about finances and I believe this was another question that was submitted in advance so for finances we do have scholarships available within the College of education so you do have to be admitted to the program an once you are admitted to the program you will start to qualify for the scholarships and there is a portal for the University in which you can apply for the scholarships and so that is one opportunity that you can.
Susannah M.
04:22:29 PM
lol nvm
Receive additional funding as well as we do have the teach grant the teach grant can provide you up to $4000 per year so if you start the program your first year you can receive $4000 up to 4 years as you complete the education program there is a contractor an agreement that an individual would need to sign that states that you were going to be teaching in a high needs.
Mary M.
04:23:00 PM
Can you request where you want to go for experience? I live in Prince William so if I wanted to do my experience there could I?
Area at a title one in a school and so you can find the list of title one schools there's links through our web page and if anyone has any specific information specific questions about that I would be happy to answer after this but that is one of the grant programs and then the loan forgiveness program and the loan forgiveness program is one that if you also sign an agreement.
Um so you use financial aid you take out loans.
An you agree to work 5 consecutive years in a title one school then you can do loan forgiveness so the big difference with those is the teach grant is provided up front it's not money that you have to pay back in any way up to the 4000 and then the loan forgiveness the difference there is that that you take out your loans you do have to start paying on your loans.
But if you teach in the title one school for 5 years then you will have your loan forgiven as at that point so that is the difference between those.
Talks about the application process so with the new program students can take the first 2 courses education 206207 before applying to the program and I mentioned earlier the time frame where elementary and special education will take those the second semester of the first year secondary P 12 would take those the first semester of the second year you would enroll in the education 206207.
During the semester in which you're enrolled in those courses that's when you would apply to the program and so you would submit the application during that semester we would hold onto that application until the end of the semester because we do want to see the grades and so you can see on the slide that we do look at your overall GPA as well as the GPA within the education courses and then we also do have.
Testing requirements and so on the next slide that does talk about the testing requirements.
So with the essay tea or AC T if you submit the essay TRACT.
Baby if you meet the requirements you do not have any additional entrance testing now there are testing requirements for licensure and we won't get into those in this presentation but each of the licensure areas requires additional testing some have more than others but for insurance purposes only the testing can be waived based on your essay T or AC T one of the things that I know.
Glynnis Farleigh
04:26:03 PM
Mary, you do not really get to request where you are placed for practicum, however, accommodations are made based on whether or not you need access to a walkable school (such as in Fredericksburg City) or if you need to carpool with another student. Most practicums are typically in Spotsylvania County, Stafford County, or Fredericksburg City. For your student teaching internship, you will be able to list a county/city preference for your placement, but it is not a guarantee. Student teaching internships have a wider breadth of placement locations, including Prince William and King George Counties.
Of the testing is that you may choose to enter young W test optional that is a choice and you do not have to submit the test to umw as a whole if you choose the test optional route however when applying to the College of education you can submit that the testing specifically to the College of education when you submit your application so hopefully that clarifies that you can.
Abby K.
04:26:40 PM
So as an admitted freshman for next year, we would apply into COE in the spring of 2021?
You can apply to umw or you very applied and admitted but you could do that without testing but then you would want to submit your test to the College of education if they meet the requirements so that any additional testing can be waived if you need additional testing you would need to complete that that semester in which you're applying and so you can see that can be met with either the praxis core math or and or the VCLA.
Francesca H.
04:26:58 PM
Good question Abby
And we will piece this together so you need a math and you need a reading writing and so if you have a qualifying essay T math score for example then you would not need to take the praxis math but you would need to take the VCLA and vice versa.
So question is as an admitted freshman for next year you would apply into cioe in the spring of 21 so that does depend on the program so if you are elementary or special education.
Sarah H.
04:27:41 PM
I am a high school senior and I will have my associate's in May of this year. How would I take EDUC 206 and 207?
You would start during the fall and you would start taking your general education courses you would have your Epsom and then other general education courses that you may be interested in and then elementary and special education would take education 206 and 207 that spring of 2021 and during that semester apply whereas for secondary and P 12 you would focus on.
Your general education courses as well as you can start with major requirements during that first year and then the first semester the fall of 2021 is when you would take education 206 and 207 an apply to then continue into the education program the spring of 2022.
So then we have the question about high school senior, the associate an. How would you take education to a 6 to 7? So this is going to be a case by case situation in which we would want to advise you individually because we know that there's going to be lots of various scenarios with where people are based on AP Credit Dual enrollment, things of that nature.
Ziyan R.
04:28:57 PM
So is it guaranteed that we can continue with the education program or do we have to meet certain criteria to officially be accepted into the COE?
As well as a possible teachers for tomorrow courses or any other transfer works so.
Abigail R.
04:29:10 PM
Is there a certain computer required for elementary education?
What I would recommend, uhm, so Sarah. HI, definitely recommend reaching out and I can communicate with you and anyone else after this so that we can look at your individual credit. How many you have an where you would start in the program.
Gabriella C.
04:29:44 PM
I am taking teachers for tomorrow this year at school with dual enrollment, so how would that credit count towards my degree?
As far as continuing so question, is it guaranteed that we can continue with the education program or do we have to meet certain criteria to officially be accepted into cioe so the criteria was on the previous slide in which you would have to have the testing requirements. You would have to have a 2.5 overall GPA. You would have to have a 3.0 in the education courses, which would be the two 06207.
Uhm, and then you also are required to submit an essay as well as your experience with leadership and working with children and so altogether that creates your application. And that application does go through a faculty review process and then based on the application review process, is whether or not you are accepted into the program. So there is not a guarantee.
However, we want you to know which is why we have you starting as early as possible with the application process, 'cause we also want you to know early on about continuing into the program, so that if you need to work on getting your GPA up or or something of that nature, you have some time to do that.
So I'm going to come back to the questions in just a second uhm. The next slide does talk about RF SEM, so if Stephanie is available to talk about this course, she can hit broadcast.
Francesca H.
04:31:04 PM
Yay my FSEM!
Alright, I can tell. So I'm gonna start talking uhm sorry I got in late my name Stephanie. I'm a senior this year. I'm an English major and I'm in the elementary education program, so I took the so you think you want to be a teacher SM my freshman year and that course was a very good introduction to education before taking intro to education course.
Abby K.
04:31:28 PM
is she speaking?
It's OK, I don't hear Stephanie. So with the FM, um, everyone is.
Everyone got the chance to select an Epsom and so this is the one specific to education. However, there are lots of different F Sims offered. You do not have to be in this particular F them. If you are interested in applying to the College of Education. It is not a requirement. It is taught by faculty in the College of Education and so yes, you will get some experience and knowledge there aren't.
Any practicums or anything like that. It is a University freshman seminar class and so with that it just develops a community. You will have the SM advisor as I said, who's a faculty within College of Education. Also be your initial advisor, but once again, if you're not in this FM and you signed up for another one, that's great. You will develop a community and get to know students in other areas.
And you will be in residence with those students to develop that community, and you'll still get to, of course, meet the faculty and meet students who go on to the College of Education. So it's not a requirement, but we do offer an SM if you are interested.
Francesca H.
04:33:14 PM
Is anyone else in Willard Hall?
In that area, the last slide here is just to let you know as you're driving down college Ave that we are in the works. Construction is beginning to look at reconfiguring what was Sica back. See Québec was the old dining facility as well as some other Department and so that building is being.
Andrea H.
04:33:37 PM
I am!
Madison K.
04:33:42 PM
I am in Willard Hall!
Are reconstructed redesign to be the College of education and so with that we're going to have a lot of collaborative classrooms were going to have updated technology in that building, and so with that you're going to have an opportunity to hopefully see that building within the next couple years. So stay tuned with that, but you definitely will see the building as you go down College Ave.
Francesca H.
04:34:03 PM
That's awesome! Can't wait to meet all of you!
So at this time I will open it up to questions. Uhm, and if Glennis Stephanie Marine, if you all would like to broadcast and we can all jump in and ask or sorry answer any questions that may come up.
Abby K.
04:34:37 PM
what kind of laptop would you recommend for COE students?
Glynnis Farleigh
04:34:42 PM
Here is what Stephanie wanted to share about the FSEM, she had technical difficulties: Hey everyone! This is Stephanie I took the teacher Fsem and can answer any questions you might have! The course was a great intro to teaching before I was in the COE I would highly recommend it to anyone!
Sarah B.
04:34:42 PM
I missed what you said regarding student teaching. Are we required to student teach in the area?
Gabriella C.
04:34:43 PM
I am taking teachers for tomorrow this year at school with dual enrollment, so how would that credit count towards my degree?
Ruth R.
04:34:53 PM
What would happen if you didn't get in to the COE?
My computer is freezing so I cannot see the questions either, so if anyone can help.
So our first question is Sarah asked. I think she must doctor back what you said about student teaching. Are we required to student teaching the area so I can, I hope, provide some context on that. So your student teaching is your internship, and that's done at the end and before that, when you're an underclassman, you will do what's called practicum, which is kind of like a more relaxed student teaching, and you get the choice of a couple different.
Counties for your student teaching, but with practicum you just kind of get placed somewhere that works best. So that can be in Fredericks, Burg City, Stafford County Spotsylvania, and then for student teaching, often Prince William County and King George County. So in that sense, yes, you are required to be in the area. So like Fairfax County or like Norfolk City, anything like that you could not do your student teaching in so you get to put a preference for your student teaching. You don't get to put a preference for your practicum. I hope that answers.
Amanda Hart
04:35:57 PM
Some questions from before: Is there a certain computer required for elementary education
Can you guys hear me now?
Lindsay C.
04:36:00 PM
Glynnis is frozen and can't be heard
Gabriella C.
04:36:01 PM
Yes
Francesca H.
04:36:01 PM
yes!
So now that we can hear you, is there anything you would like to add on the SRAM? I know I wasn't.
Amanda Hart
04:36:12 PM
I am taking teachers for tomorrow this year at school with dual enrollment, so how would that credit count towards my degree?
I'm so glad I was able to get in. I've been listening the whole time and I couldn't figure it out right. Well my name is Stephanie. I took the so you think you want me to teach your SM when I was a freshman, I'm seeing you now so for me I thought that that course was a very good introduction to teaching before I actually was admitted into the seoi, I did a lot of lesson planning and got to speak with some teachers in the area and did some research projects that kind of gave an insight to what.
The rest of the path in CIA we would be like and I got to meet the professors and most of the people in my Epson where people that are actually still in the College of Ed. A few of them didn't end up following the track, but most of them are in the sea with me now, so I think it was very good option, at least for me specifically. So anybody has any questions about that, I'd be more than happy to answer them.
There is also a question about computers.
If you guys can't hear me type that in the chat bar and I can just chat that there's no specific technology required to be in cioe outside of whatever kind of computer laptop you might normally need. If that's the question that you're asking, if I'm understanding that correctly.
Doctor Brett, can you see the chat or is it frozen?
Stephanie Rizzo
04:37:40 PM
There is no computer requirement for elementary education
Someone asked the about the teachers for tomorrow asking, uh, so it says, Amanda says I'm taking teachers for tomorrow. This year at school with dual enrollment. So how would that credit count towards my degree? I think it was asked once or twice.
OK, so with the teachers for tomorrow course it does. We do look at who the dual enrollment credit is coming through because there are so many different teachers for tomorrow of course is being taught and they're taught a little bit differently. So that is one in which you would.
Want to communicate with me directly and we would look at that particular course where you took it and the dual enrollment credit if you took the course without dual enrollment you Unfortunately do not receive any credit but if you did receive dual enrollment than possible transfer credit so we will talk about that individually.
Gabriella C.
04:38:40 PM
Ok thank you!
I'm not sure if this was answered yet or not, but somebody asked what would happen if you didn't get into the College of Ed. I don't know if you want to answer that.
So if you do not get in and it depends on what reason, so if it is something such as GPA is not high enough, then we're going to work with you were going to give you time to get your GPA up and try to see if we can blend you back into the cohort system. If it is a matter of testing.
Um, once again we can work with you trying to get the testing required and then get you moving in the education program again. Those are going to be two of the main reasons. Any other issues that may come up we could we would address, but mainly it's going to be looking at your GPA in your test scores.

Are there any research projects required for the 4-year program?
Ziyan R.
04:39:46 PM
The B.S. ED. in Elementary Education allows you to only teach within the state of VA, right?
Gabriella C.
04:40:01 PM
What would you say is the hardest part about the program
There is not. It's not going to be the same as the current five year program because research is a requirement for a Masters degree within the college education, so it most likely will be a requirement within the new accelerated math terms, but not within the undergraduate.
Search programs or research projects required for the 4 year program.

Is there a computer you guys suggest to get??
Lindsay C.
04:40:35 PM
Glynnis is frozen and cannot be heard
So I see a question also about somebody asking about if the bachelors in elementary education only allows you to teach in the state of Virginia so how that works is that that program will actually allow you to get your teachers license for the state of Virginia and for years so once you have that license you can go and go into any state and pretty easily transfer that license over you might have to take an additional test.
Uhm but more or less Virginia has pretty high standards so if you want to go out of the state once you already have completed the Virginia license you can transfer it pretty easily with minimal extra requirements.

Is it possible to major in another subject area along with Elementary Education Or minor?
Stephanie Rizzo
04:40:52 PM
You can transfer states wit a VA licensure
Then it looks like there's another question. It says what would you say is the hardest part about the program? I really can't think of anything like I feel like at times when things have been hard, like getting my ouers, or I've been struggling like writing a lesson or doing a project. I always go to the professor's office and it's really helpful, so I feel like anything that I stumble apply was unable to communicate with them. For them, tell me.
Stephanie Rizzo
04:41:15 PM
it will take transfer processes but you can move to any state you'd like

04:41:18 PM
Can I minor is Spanish and Major in Elementary Education?
Also with the computers, if you guys some people have been seeing him frozen so I don't know if I should keep talking or if I should just start typing.
Gonna keep talking all copy whatever you say into the chat so you.
Stephanie Rizzo
04:41:43 PM
Computers-- you will be accessing word/ powerpoint for lessons and internet
OK, so the computer again the only computer work you're going to be doing is accessing the web and word processing or creating a PowerPoint so any computer or tablet that will allow you to access the web and type on it is all you need. We don't do anything.
Special really with that.
James C.
04:42:11 PM
do you know when the accelerated masters program will be accredited?
I would recommend whatever you're comfortable using. You're really going to be using it to write a lot of lesson plans. You're going to be using it to read some articles. Um, that your professors will give you and then if you could do the library. So whatever you feel the most comfortable using. I have a regular PC Windows just stay in her Lane laptop that also have an iPad that I use sometimes depending on what I have to do. So depending on what.
Not comfortable with there's now. I don't think there's one thing better than another. I just feel like it's over the most comfortable using.
Stephanie Rizzo
04:42:26 PM
we do not do anything specific for laptops
Glynnis Farleigh
04:42:30 PM
Fracesca, if you have the time to complete a minor, you are allowed to. Check out the full listing of minors here: https://publications.umw.edu/undergraduatecatalog/courses-of-study/minors/
And then it looks like there's two questions that are kind of the same. Doctor Brett. It says one MSS. Is it possible to major in another subject area along with elementary education or minor and then Francesca ask, can I minor in Spanish and major in elementary education?
Both very good question so with the elementary education major so your degree is made up really a 3 part you're going to have your general education requirements you're going to have your major requirements and then you're going to have this bucket of other that could be electives it could be minor etc so yes there is possibility.
Stephanie Rizzo
04:43:14 PM
Let us know if you cannot hear Dr. Brecht
Sarah B.
04:43:26 PM
I can hear her
For minor uhm as far as another major that's going to add on courses so most likely take you above the 120 credit hours to graduate and so with that you really would want to look at what are the requirements of the other area you're interested in and so you would take and you would add up your general education requirements you'd add up the elementary major requirement.
Francesca H.
04:43:53 PM
Okay thank you!
And then you can kind of determine how many you want to take above and beyond. If it does take you above the 1:20 so there is the possibility there is room for some electives within the degree program, but it's just a matter of how many that area requires.
There's also a question it seems. Do we know when the accelerated Masters program will be accredited? Believe that was two years, right?
Yes, that is the plan is for two years. We just had a meeting recently that we discussed when our goal of starting that would be and the goal is to start in two years.

04:44:17 PM
Are there cases where a practicum or student teaching conflicts ((in terms of time commitment) with classes required for a major?
Alright, so this next question says are there cases when a practicum or student teaching conflicts with classes required for major in terms of time commitment?
So with the new program and an, I'll go ahead and answer this since it's different. So um, with Glennis Marine and Stephanie there all currently in our five year program, which the internship is during that fifth year. So with the new program the internship would be the last semester of your degree and so it would be the spring of your senior year. And during that time we only want you to be enrolled.
In the internship and the internship seminar class. So therefore you wouldn't have any other courses to conflict. So we would want you to get your major courses in prior to that semester to alleviate that any conflict. Because with the internship you're going to be in a classroom setting every day and so you don't want to have other courses that you would be required to attend because you won't be available.
Owen C.
04:46:03 PM
Got it, thank you so much!
James C.
04:46:04 PM
how long will the new masters program be?
If there aren't any other questions right this second, if each of you um, would kind of just share with the students on the call your why, uhm, why MW? Or why? College of Education?
I think there was one other question about with this accelerated Masters, how long it would be if it would be a one year or two year.
OK, we the plan would be a one year, but sandwich with two summers on. The idea is that.
Brendan M.
04:46:45 PM
Will playing a sport hurt in the case just like the other classes, like minoring in another subject
If you complete the undergraduate program, you'll have all of the requirements for a teaching license, and so therefore you could potentially start working that following year, and we want this program to be available to those students who do move directly into teaching, and so knowing that you would not be available during the day during the fall in the spring. So we wanna go lighter in the fall and spring Anne heavier with the summer before, and the summer after, so it's slightly over a year.
Stephanie Rizzo
04:47:02 PM
I would say no as long as you can manage your time well.
Being that we're looking at summer, fall, spring, summer.
And we also have a question about how plainness sport would fit in.
I just replied to that, uhm?
I don't believe it would affect. Uhm, it would hurt you. I think as long as you're able to manage your time well and kind of prioritize well and know what you need to get done 1st and be able to handle everything you have going on, you should be able to play your sport. I know a lot of us are involved in a lot of other organizations and clubs, and maybe not the same as sports, but I know we're all involved in a lot of other things as well, and we've been able to manage them the best that we can. So I think that you can definitely do it as well.
Absolutely yes. The only thing that we we've been in touch with the athletic Department were in communication so that they are aware of everything the coaches are aware. With spring sports we will look at with like if you have an away game and you have to travel. If that effects your very last semester when you're in internship. So we do have a plan in place for any spring support spring sport.
Athletes during the internship semester.
Stephanie Rizzo

Spring sports will be monitored more because of internships

I chose college of education because I have been working with sepcial education students for a long time and I realized that this is what I want to do and it makes me happy and to see them happy too
I can start so I would say Y for umw just I think.

I picked the College of Education, because I love helping others. In addition, I have wanted to become an educator, since I was three years old. I picked UMW, because its near where I currently live.
It's hard to say, but MW is the first campus I visited and like immediately walked on it to my mom's like This Is It? She was like you're crazy like we need to visit other schools. I think she was just scared to like let me go to college and stuff. So I just like the campus atmosphere like everybody was so nice even the students just like it really felt like I was in college even though I was still in high school. But I think that was why free MW, especially the small classes. I feel like that's really helpful. I have a lot of friends who go to bigger schools and you know when I hear that they have like 300 to 400 people in their classes and like that.
Francesca H.
04:49:11 PM
Mary-That's great! I'm rooting for you. Seems like we'll be pretty close which is awesome!
Glynnis Farleigh
04:49:16 PM
We are so happy to have you all as part of the program! :)
Like that just seems like too much to me because I wouldn't be able to communicate with the professor and then Y. For CL we I've always wanted to be a teacher. It's been like in my whole family, my grandmother, my mom, and so I think with the five year Masters that was really helpful too. And just all the professors I've had almost had a class with almost every professor. I've known them. And then the friendships I've built and the commute like just the practicum experiences everything has just been so wonderful and so eye opening, and I think it just really has reinforced. So like why I want to become a teacher so.
Yeah, um, so my wife very MW is the same as Marines. It was my first college tour when I was in high school and it was the only school that I looked at. Um, I came into Virginia is an out of state student such boring schools in Virginia was hard for me. I could only do.
Also, left hand handful of them. So when I got to him W just felt very comfortable and I also liked, uh, small. The campus felt it felt very homey. I felt like I would be able to succeed better at a smaller school with less students. I feel like I could work with professors better and then my wife for Coe is.
Francesca H.
04:50:47 PM
I chose UMW because it was the school that made me feel the most comfortable and I love the concept that teaching is a job where you learn. Students and children are very insightful and can teach their teachers new things so it's very inspiring and I can't picture myself doing anything else than being an Elementary School teacher
Gabriella C.
04:50:47 PM
I picked the college of education because I have been inspired by my family and who amazing educators they have bee. I have always helped my mom in her classroom and around the school. This school was so close to me and and seems so amazing. I can't wait to learn from the professors hear and grow so I can impact lives like my family has
Come on the same thing as I've been reading from a lot of you guys which is so great to hear. I wanted to be a teacher forever. It's the only thing I've ever been able to see myself doing, and I think the CEO am doing is a very good job of communicating with you and making everything is easy for you as they possibly can. They are very open, inflexible and they will work with you whatever you need. Very personable, they really care about you and they care about us and UW has built a very, very good environment in coa.
And yeah, I agree with both of you guys on that. UMW was the only school I applied to. I toured a few others, but it was only campus I really liked. It's really nice campus and I really like the surrounding area. Fredericks, burg. As far as he is concerned. I've been really happy with the practicum experience in classroom experience that I've had a lot of schools don't put you in a classroom until you're almost done with the program and UMW it gives you that really big advantage to just get acclimated to being in a classroom. So by the time you're nearing the end of the program
You have all that time to really focus on yourself as a teacher, and you're already comfortable being in that environment.
And the C in UMW is a hold. The class size is really great, so you're never going to feel lost in a classroom. You're always going to have that Accessibility to all of your professors, and I think that's super important. Honestly, in a college, and I think you all will benefit from it.
Are there any final questions?
Francesca H.
