International Students

Submit the Application for Admission including essays and $50 USD application fee by the suggested filing date. 

Submit an official transcript evaluation from a NACES or AACRAO recognized agency.

Submit proof of English language proficiency. University of Mary Washington does not offer an “English as a Second Language” program for international students. Several options are available. Where applicable, all scores must be sent directly to UMW from the testing agency:

  • The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) by achieving a composite score of 88 TOEFL IBT or 570 paper-based score www.toefl.org.
  • Or a Certificate of Completion from the ELS Language Centers (ELS) Intensive English Program by completing Level 112 English for Academic Purposes
  • Or an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.5 on the academic exam www.ielts.org

All students must be able to demonstrate that they can pay for their academic and living expenses while in the United States (UMW does not provide graduate student housing). After the student is admitted, the University of Mary Washington will issue a Form I-20 “Certificate of Eligibility for Non-Immigrant (F-1) Status.”   You will need to present this form to the U.S. embassy or consulate when you apply for your visa.  All non-U.S. citizens must provide information regarding their resources for payment for their education in the United States by completing a Financial Statement of Support.

  • Other Visa Holders:
    Permanent residents of the United States must:

    • Submit the Application for Admission and the Application for Virginia In-State Tuition Rates
    • Submit Appropriate Test Scores
    • Submit a photocopy of your permanent resident card (front and back)  
  • Applicants for permanent residence in the U.S. who have submitted form I-485 to USCIS, and hold a copy of the receipt notice (form I-797C):
    • Submit the Application for Admission and the Application for Virginia In-State Tuition Rates
    • Submit Appropriate Test Scores
    • Submit a photocopy of your receipt notice (I-797C).
  • Non-immigrants ( transfer students) currently attending university in the United States:
    • Submit the Application for Admission and the Application for Virginia In-State Tuition Rates
    • Submit Appropriate Test Scores
    • Submit the UMW Visa Transfer Clearance Form
    • Submit a Financial Statement of Support
    • Submit a copy of your passport’s biographical page
    • Submit copies of U.S. visas, I-94 cards
    • Submit a copy of your current/previous I-20s
  • If your immigration status is derived from someone else, please include supporting documents of the primary visa holder.
  • Note all documents can be scanned or faxed to 540/654-1857.
  • Certificate of Eligibility (I-20)
    • Once admitted to the University, the UMW Office of International Academic Services (IAS) will issue a Certificate of Eligibility (I-20), permitting you to apply for a student (F-1) visa. In order to qualify for an I-20, you must certify that you have financial capability at your disposal to cover your expenses for all years of study at the University. The 2010-2011 required minimum is U.S. $30,000 for the first academic year.
    • The IAS begins issuance of the I-20 in mid-May. The I-20 is delivered by courier to foreign countries
